Dearest Throop

                         REST IN PEACE

Throop Brown, Jr., 77,  died of natural causes on Wednesday, April 8, 2020. Throop was born in New Haven, Connecticut on November 1, 1942. He began collecting stamps at the age of four and became a serious philatelist by the time he was twelve. He enjoyed many years with the Boy Scouts, serving as a Scout Master. After graduating from Dartmouth in 1964, receiving an MA from Ohio University, and serving as an Army officer, he became a full time philatelist in 1970.

Working first as an auction describer and appraiser, he advanced to senior positions as catalog editor and auction manager. In 1992, he launched his own company, Connexus Stamp Auctions. He continued to do appraisal and describing work for other auction houses on a contract and on a consulting basis and during his lifetime, he conducted many hundreds of appraisals.

Throop was also an enthusiastic traveler.  While at Dartmouth, he went to Newfoundland and Labrador on an archaeological expedition. In later years he traveled with his wife, Karen, to Uruguay, Costa Rica, Egypt, France and the UK. Throop loved the ocean, sea life, and beach combing on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  He also enjoyed weeding in Karen’s garden (really!).

Throop’s society memberships included the American Philatelic Society (Dealer Life Member, 1970), the American Stamp Dealer's Association, the American Revenue Association, and the NC Postal History Society.

Throop is survived by his wife of 17 years, Karen (Sheaffer) Brown; a daughter, Dr. Sandra Brown of Santa Cruz, CA; a stepson, David Sheaffer and wife Aubrie; and two granddaughters, Ada Lynn Sheaffer and Sarah Driscoll Larkin.
